Arsenal FC in FIFA money probe

A story just breaking has implicated David Dein and Arsenal FC PLC in a money laundering scandal in Belgium.

The BBC has reported the investigation as serious enough to be putting Arsenal's 2006-2007 Champions League participation into doubt.

Belgium club Beveren, known on these shores as a sort of feeder club for Arsenal, accepted a £1m payment from a company with no name in 2001. Shortly after accepting this payment, Beveren discarded the majority of their Belgian players and replaced them with players from Ivory Coast. Arsenal signed Ivorian Manu Eboue from the club in January 2005.

The issue is whether or not Arsenal have had a controlling interest in the Belgium club. Controlling the Belgian club would contravene FIFA regulations and if proven will leave Arsenal facing serious FIFA punishment.
