Future Watch - Gavin Hotye

Defenders are too often very easy to miss when talent spotting. But during the Arsenal under 18s 1-0 victory over Manchester United last night in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final, Gavin Hoyte stood out amongst the fantastic array of young talent assembled in red and white.

In front of 39000 at the Emirates, Hoyte marshalled a pacy Arsenal back four to keep the eager United forwards honest throughout the match.

Younger brother of first team debutant Justin Hoyte, Gavin displayed a truly remarkable ability on the ball combined with a calmness in possession rarely seen in defenders of any age.

Impressive too was his blazing speed but that should be no surprise given Justin's pace. What was a surprise was his remarkable similarity to another Arsenal defender in the shape of one William Gallas. Athletic and confident, Hoyte is as much the next Gallas as Diaby is the next Vieira or Adebayor the next Kanu. I'm not sure how Wenger keeps finding these kids but I am delighted that this one is local and a childhood fan of the club.
